Septic Tank Conversion

Uni:Gem2 Septic Tank ConversionIn the 1960’s we saw the introduction of the first GPR Septic Tanks with a series of baffle plates that separated the heavy solids from the effluent.

These Septic tanks proved a cost effective way of handling domestic sewage in areas with no access to mains sewer. These were installed predominately in rural areas.

The Ongoing Problem with Septic TanksThe two major problems can exist with septic tanks:

  1. The tanks are often poorly maintained and service, with very often prolonged periods of time lapsing between de-sludging and percolation testing.

  2. Unfavourable ground conditions for the percolation area, e.g. clay soils or areas of high water table.

Damage can be done to the structure of the septic tanks during desludging by the metal rings on the hoses and on occasion chemicals have been used to clean the tanks that then drain and pollute into the subsoil and ground water.

The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) of raw sewage is usually very high in septic tanks therefore the available oxygen is very quickly consumed this can limit the breakdown of the sewage.

The recommended suspended solids level in BS6297:1983 is <30mg/litre, in a well maintained septic tank the average would be between 65-80mg/litre. In poorly maintained tanks levels in excess of 150mg/litre are often found. A similar performance is found on the BOD where the level stated in BS6297:1983 is <20mg/litre.

Package Sewage Treatment have been proven to be an effective and reliable method of dealing with domestic sewage. The final costs of these units, though often prohibits many people from purchasing these plants when required. The end result can be the prosecution of the home owner for pollution from the septic tank.

Uni:Gem2 Caring for your environment

The solution is the Uni:Gem2. This unit utilises the existing septic tank whilst adding two chambers. One chamber provides an aerobic condition through the aeration of the effluent through a media bed equally to a surface area in excess of 100m2 (the guidance in BS6297:1983 for a six person unit is 70m2 and 90m2 for a twelve person plant).

The treated effluent then passes to humas (final settlement tank), before being discharged into watercourse or subsoil.

The plant is designed to treat effluent to a standard of 20:30:20 Uni:Gem2 is an extremely cost effective way of ensuring ground water is not polluted from effluent discharged from a septic tank.

We believe savings of up to 50% can be achieved by installing a Uni:Gem2.
Whilst treating effluent to an extremely high standard.

The Uni:Gem2 is a high performance system proceed competitively to ensure home owners can comply to Environmental Agency standards without having to spend typically between £5,000 and £7,000.

The Uni:Gem2 by using the existing septic tank reduces the cost of installation when compared to the costs of complete new sewage treatment plants, it also alleviates the cost of excavation and the disposal costs of the septic tank. This has tremendous added Environmental Benefits on the prevention of spillage as well the land fill savings.
